Get the solution for your advanced hosting needs.

A Dedicated Hosting IP gives your hosting account and website a unique IP address, one that’s not shared by any other accounts on the same server. So if you need direct access to your site, even when your DNS records are being propagated, or are planning to add a 3rd-party SSL Certificate, a Dedicated Hosting IP may be for you.

Dedicated Hosting IP (Internet Protocol) means each web hosting account has a unique address, not shared by any other accounts on the same server.

The majority of all Web sites are hosted via shared IP, and most Three E Technology LTD hosting customers don¡¯t need a Dedicated Hosting IP. However, you might consider paying the small additional cost for Dedicated Hosting IP if:

  • You want to access your accounts by FTP as well as the Web when the domain name is otherwise inaccessible, such as domain name propagation periods.
  • You want your site to be backwards-compatible with older browsers.
  • You want to create a corporate intranet.
  • You need a faster response with high traffic loads.
  • You want a SSL certificated;
  • You want to be ranked higher in Google and no Bad neighbors. A Well Operated website, or a well known website needs dedicated IPs and never want the bad neighbor to share its IPs

What is IP Address and What is Dedicated IP?

An IP address, or Internet Protocol address, is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. IP addresses serve two main purposes: host or network interface identification and location addressing. They allow devices to communicate with each other over a network.

There are two types of IP addresses:

  1. IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4):
    • This is the most commonly used IP version. IPv4 addresses consist of four sets of numbers separated by dots, such as 192.168.1.1. However, due to the increasing number of devices connected to the internet, the available pool of IPv4 addresses is running out. This has led to the adoption of IPv6.
  2. IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6):
    • IPv6 is designed to address the limitations of IPv4 by providing a much larger address space. IPv6 addresses are represented as a series of hexadecimal digits separated by colons, such as 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334.

Now, a dedicated IP address refers to an IP address that is assigned exclusively to a single hosting account or domain. In a shared hosting environment, multiple websites share the same server and, consequently, the same IP address. However, in some cases, you might need a dedicated IP address for your website. Here are a few reasons why someone might opt for a dedicated IP:

  1. SSL Certificate:
    • If you want to use SSL (Secure Socket Layer) for your website, you typically need a dedicated IP address. SSL certificates are associated with specific IP addresses, and having a dedicated IP ensures that your SSL certificate is uniquely tied to your domain.
  2. Anonymous FTP Access:
    • If you need to provide anonymous FTP access to your site visitors, a dedicated IP address can be beneficial.
  3. SEO Considerations:
    • While it’s debated, some argue that having a dedicated IP address can have a positive impact on search engine rankings. However, the influence of IP addresses on SEO is minimal compared to other factors.
  4. Avoiding IP Reputation Issues:
    • In a shared hosting environment, if one website on the server engages in spamming or other malicious activities, it could affect the IP reputation of all the websites on that server. With a dedicated IP, you have more control over your site’s reputation.
  5. Accessing the Website via IP:
    • If your website is in the development phase, having a dedicated IP allows you to access the site directly via the IP address before the domain is pointed to the server.

It’s important to note that, in many cases, having a dedicated IP address is not a strict requirement for hosting a website. However, depending on your specific needs, such as SSL certificate requirements, it may be beneficial to opt for a hosting plan that includes a dedicated IP address.

What is the Relationship Between Dedicated IP and SSL ?

The relationship between a dedicated IP address and SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is related to how SSL certificates are configured and managed. Here’s how they are connected:

  1. SSL Certificates Require an IP Address:
    • Traditionally, SSL certificates are associated with specific IP addresses. This is because the SSL/TLS handshake, a process that establishes a secure connection between the web server and the user’s browser, occurs before the HTTP request is made. During this handshake, the server presents its SSL certificate to the browser. The certificate is associated with a specific IP address.
  2. Shared IP vs. Dedicated IP:
    • In shared hosting environments, multiple websites may share the same IP address. However, since SSL certificates are tied to IP addresses, using SSL on a shared IP can be problematic. If one website on a shared IP uses SSL, all websites on that IP would need to use the same SSL certificate. This limitation makes it challenging to implement SSL for individual domains on shared IPs.
  3. Dedicated IP for Individual SSL Certificates:
    • Having a dedicated IP address for your website allows you to have your own unique SSL certificate. This is important for securing communication between your website and visitors. With a dedicated IP, your SSL certificate is directly associated with your domain, and the SSL handshake can be completed successfully.
  4. SNI (Server Name Indication):
    • SNI is a technology that allows multiple SSL certificates to be hosted on the same IP address. This means that in some cases, you can use SSL on a shared IP without requiring a dedicated IP for each SSL certificate. However, SNI is not supported by all browsers, particularly some older versions. Many modern browsers support SNI, but if you have visitors using older browsers, using a dedicated IP for SSL is a more reliable option.

In summary, the relationship between a dedicated IP and SSL lies in the need for a unique IP address to associate with an SSL certificate. While technologies like SNI can allow multiple SSL certificates on a shared IP, having a dedicated IP is still a common and reliable way to ensure that each website can have its own SSL certificate without potential compatibility issues. If you’re planning to implement SSL for your website, check with your hosting provider to understand their support for SNI and whether a dedicated IP is necessary for your specific requirements.
